Young People
Lily Studios is pleased to announce that a new service is now being offered for children, teenagers and young adults who present with self-destructive behaviours (including self-injury, eating disorders, overeating, substance use, suicidal thinking, suicide attempts or simply an inability to manage with daily problems).People engage in self-destructive behaviours for a variety of reasons, but most commonly to cope with stress, overwhelming emotions, difficult situations, and interpersonal conflict. While some self destructive behaviours work by allowing the person to ‘escape’ from their troubles (for example, substance use, overeating), other self destructive behaviours give a person a sense of control over their lives (for example, restrictive eating, self-injury). Although self-destructive behaviours may be successful ways of coping in the short term, they always lead to more problems and suffering over time.
Suicide attempts occur when a person becomes hopeless about life ever improving. Suicidal thinking is a symptom of depression and can be treated at Lily Studios.
Self-destructive behaviours are treated in a number of ways, and depend on the personal characteristics of each individual. Characteristics which are considered include age, gender, other existing health problems, trauma history, extent of available social support, and willingness to change. The medical severity of the behaviours is also considered. Therapeutic approaches include Cognitive Behaviour Therapy, Dialectical Behaviour Therapy, Schema Focused Therapy, Emotion Focused Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, and Family Therapy.
