Sessions
We offer half hour, 45 minute and 1 hour consultations. The first session is usually 60 minutes and involves a discussion of the issue or issues and some initial therapy planning. Subsequent sessions include discussion about relevant issues, thoughts, feelings and reactions, problem solving, skills development, useful educational information about the issue and the use of a range of effective therapeutic strategies. Goals and therapy plans are reviewed as sessions proceed.
Typically, a person may expect to need between five and ten sessions with our psychologists to make lasting changes. Occasionally, two or three sessions will be sufficient. Some complex issues and life experiences require longer term support. Although it is often difficult to take the first step, we find that most people quickly relax in the first session and report that they are glad they have finally taken action to obtain confidential, objective and professional assistance.
Benefits
There are many benefits of professional counselling. In brief, most people find that they simply feel a lot better as a result of the counselling - often better than they have felt for a long time. Many people find that they can see things in a better perspective and think more clearly and positively about things and themselves. Others are happy because they have been able to develop skills and abilities they can take away to make everyday life easier and more rewarding. Often, important relationships improve and become more harmonious. Many people find they are able to handle problems they would not have been able to manage alone. Of enormous value to most people is the feeling of being supported and reassured without judgement. Almost everybody reports that they value the objectivity and confidentiality provided by a professional counsellor.
